Reading is learned in sentence contexts. Reading is also learned by breaking up individual words into their separate parts. The latter method also requires a knowledge of what letters and letter combinations make what sounds

Debate continues about how much emphasis should be placed on which method. Some argue over-stress on the first method skips over the basics of reading skills and leaves many children behind. Others argue the second method keeps children back.
