A student from Africa was attending a university in Melbourne, and went to a basic spelling and grammar course to check that her English, (her fifth language) was 'up to scratch'. However she left in amazement after finding that others in the class struggled to name and/or sound out the vowel sounds. Admittedly some (but only some) of these students were foreigners themselves. But their major problem was to even believe that the vowel sounds in the English language are important!
